Toronto – The Fano forces in the Gojjam, Amhara region of Ethiopia, have reportedly launched a new military offensive across Gojjam.
Dubbed as “Operation Semaetat” (translates to Operation Martyrs), it was launched on Monday starting 5 a.m. in the morning.
Ethiopian Media Services (EMS) on Monday reported that the announcement came from Zinabu Lingerew who is the military commander of the Fano forces in Gojjam.
The operation is intended to commemorate Fano combatants (commanders and ordinary fighters) and civilians the Ethiopian Defense Forces reportedly massacred in drone strike, artillery shelling and extrajudicial killings across the region.
What is known at this point is that the operation was launched in 18 locations across Gojjam. The form of the operation differs from place to place.
Fano Marshet, who is the spokesperson of Gojjam Fano, told EMS that in some places the offensive was launched directly targeting Defense Force fortified positions.
In other places, the Fano forces, he added, took control of district towns blocking the Federal Highway with the aim to disrupt the mobility of Ethiopian government troops.
Fano, through its spokesperson, claimed that it has seized a sizable amount of firearms from different locations. At least 20 individual assault rifles were seized in the first two hours of the operation, he added. However, it was unspecified if there were casualties from both sides.
18 district towns were targeted in the operation. Kuye, Weira, Bichena, Worq Amba, Gozamen, Bibughe and Amanuel are among the towns the Fano forces claimed to have attacked. However, it is unclear if the Fano forces are in control of the towns at the time of this writing.
Ethiopian Federal government has not yet remarked on Fano’s latest claim in Gojjam area.
Meanwhile, intense battles are reported in Gondar, Shoa and Wollo areas of the Amhara region. The Ethiopian government has been consistently claiming that it has weakened the Fano forces (it calls them extremists).
That does not seem to be the case. Major Mamo Lemma, a military analyst who was also a member of the Ethiopian Defense Force during colonel Mengistu Hailemariam government, told Anchor Media this week that Fano’s “military power is growing.”
