Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – Dr. Kassahun Gofe, Minister of Trade and Regional Integration announced today that Ethiopia earned $8.3 billion from exports in the 2017 fiscal year.
The minister made this statement at the annual Trade and Regional Sector conference, “Towards a Tangible National Promise Through Streamlined Trade,” which was organized to assess the performance of the Ministry of Trade and Regional Integration for the 2017 (2025) fiscal year.
State affiliated media, EBC reported that the minister said that during the fiscal year, 3 million members of the business community received assistance from online services in the domestic trade sector.
The Minister further said that action was allegedly taken against 110,000 traders who engaged in illicit trade and those who fabricated shortages after macroeconomic reforms were put into place.
He added that Sunday market centers have been established as part of a massive effort to fight inflation.
According to the report, significant progress was also reported in the negotiations to join the World Trade Organization (WTO). It was also said that the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) will start in September of next year.
