Hundreds of members of the Ethiopian-Amhara community and their supporters demonstrated outside the BBC headquarters in London on Wednesday, demanding international attention to what they describe as a genocide against the Amhara people in Ethiopia.
The protest, organized by London Fano, a diaspora group with ties to the Amhara resistance movement, attracted a large crowd from across the UK. They held banners and placards with powerful messages like “Stop Amhara genocide,” “Abiy Ahmed is a killer,” and “Shame on you BBC.” The demonstration is part of a series of mobilizations by Amhara diaspora groups across Europe and North America since the conflict escalated in 2023.
A central theme of the protest was the anger directed at major international institutions and governments for their perceived silence and complicity. Speakers and chants singled out the United Nations, Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International, accusing them of failing to adequately address the atrocities.
Demonstrators also accused foreign governments of enabling the violence. They specifically called out the United Arab Emirates (UAE) for allegedly supplying armed drones used in attacks on civilians in the Amhara region. The UK government was also criticized for continuing to maintain diplomatic and economic relations with the Ethiopian administration under Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, despite a long history of human rights abuse allegations.

Perhaps the most striking element of the protest was the direct challenge to the BBC, outside whose offices the demonstration was staged. Protesters accused the broadcaster of failing to adequately cover atrocities committed against Amharas, despite widespread reports from rights groups and diaspora communities.
Chants of “Shame on you BBC” punctuated the speeches, with organizers insisting that mainstream media has a moral duty to shine a light on the crisis.
The rally was part of a wider wave of mobilization among Amhara diaspora communities across Europe, North America, and beyond. London Fano, one of the most active diaspora groups, has organized several demonstrations in the UK over the past two years. Members say they are determined to keep international attention focused on the Amhara crisis until m eaningful action is taken.
“London Fano is the voice of our people here,” the organizer told the crowd. “We will not remain silent while our mothers, fathers, and children are being slaughtered back home.”
