Toronto – Air ticket prices have been soaring in recent years. The Nairobi-Addis Ababa trip, or the other way, is not an exception.
Abyssinia Luxury Coach, a passenger road transport service based in Nairobi, is stepping in to offer a road transport as an alternative to what is otherwise a two hours flight between the two cities.
The company already started the service a few weeks ago now. Ethiopia’s Ministry of Transport last week announced that it was not aware of the service.
And this week news emerged that the Ministry and Abyssinia Luxury Coach had a conversation about the road transport service.
According to DW Amharic report, Ethiopia’s Ministry of Transport and Logistic is preparing a legal framework for the cross-country passenger’s bus service between neighboring Kenya and Ethiopia.
Abyssinia Luxury Coach is aiming to offer the service daily from Addis Ababa to Kenya and the other way round.
“There is extensive movement of people between the two neighboring countries. Secondly, the two hour flight between Addis Ababa and Nairobi costs about $1300 dollars which is about 140,000 birr. But we are charging for one trip around 15,000 Kenyan shillings or 16,000 Ethiopian Birr,” Michael James, Director of Abyssinia Luxury Coach, told DW Amharic.
Apart from increasing airfare prices, the flights between Addis Ababa and Nairobi do not offer chances for business people to directly access places, cities and towns. The Director highlighted that the bus services offer opportunities in that regard.
The company has reportedly prepared eight buses in Nairobi for the trip, and eight other buses are purchased for the Addis Ababa-Nairobi way. The buses for Addis are yet to arrive in the country.
In terms of travel hours, the plan is to make the trip in one stretch within 24 hours without the need for layovers. The bus will be leaving Addis Ababa around 4:30 a.m. and will be in Moyale around 5 p.m. , and then will proceed to Nairobi after Immigration check aiming to arrive in Nairobi in the morning.
Security is certainly an issue. There have been reports of kidnapping involving passenger buses between Addis Ababa and Bahir Dar. Michael James says the company has conducted a study about it. The company plans to undertake the trip from Addis Ababa to Moyale during day time only.
