Toronto – Renewed attack against the followers of Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church is reported in Arsi zone, Oromia region of Ethiopia.

The zone has seen a relentless attack against Orthodox Christians over the past two years. Sources indicate the attack was getting more  intense over the past two weeks.

As many as 20 Orthodox Christians were attacked.

Two days ago, a young man was reportedly killed in a horrifying manner in Robe district of the Arsi zone. Gunmen, apparently roaming free in the area, are said to be behind it.

The government has been making claims for more than, at least, four years that it is in control of the security situation in the region, and the militant groups operating in the region “could no longer pose threat to the region’s security.”

On Wednesday, four gunmen reportedly torched four homes in the district and took away about 8 cattle.

Residents from the area reportedly told Ethiopian Media Services (EMS) that the gunmen took many residents over the past two years, and they have not yet returned. Their whereabouts is unknown.

Arsi zone has particularly been targets of radical militants, and a part of the armed group in the region is said to have a religious motive of cleansing the area from Orthodox Christians, in connection with the massacre of Orthodox Christians.

The regional government or the federal government have not remarked on the intensifying attack in the Arsi zone.

As well, the Ethiopian Orthodox Church has not released a statement or confirmed the latest incidents in Arsi over the past two years.
