Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – The Ethiopian Embassy in Djibouti and the IOM partnered in facilitating the return of 233 Ethiopian migrants from the Negad railway station as the country is tightening immigration laws.
The embassy stated that it has repeatedly called on citizens to be aware of the dangers of illegal migration and reiterated that it will continue to intensify its efforts to return irregular migrants to their home country in the coming days.
Following a stern warning from Djiboutian authorities in April of this year of they would deport foreign nationals residing in the country without legal permits, including a large number of Ethiopians, the same embassy advised Ethiopian nationals without resident permits to voluntarily return to their country of origin.
Many Ethiopian migrants use Djibouti as a transit point to travel to Arabian nations, risking a perilous journey to get there. As a hub for migrants, Djibouti recently updated its immigration law, making it strict enough to deport many illegal migrants, including Ethiopians.
According to the IOM, migrants are increasingly exposed to arrest and detention within Djibouti, as well as life-threatening conditions during their onward journeys across the Gulf of Aden.
On October 1, 2024, 48 Ethiopian national migrants lost their lives in an incident off the coast of Djibouti, which the Ethiopian Embassy in Djibouti confirmed were all Ethiopians.
In today’s statement, the embassy advised citizens to “follow only legal channels to protect yourselves, your families, and your community from physical, psychological harm, and death.”
