Toronto – Mesfin Tassew, Ethiopian Airlines, CEO is reportedly staying one more year in the position.

There have been rumors in recent months that he is leaving.

Ethiopian Reporter this week cited him as saying that his retirement is extended by one more year with request from the Federal government. He has accepted the request.

Mesfin Tassew took the CEO role of Ethiopian Airlines in March 2022 following what appeared to be unseen resignation of the former CEO, Tewelde Gebremariam.

According to the source, Mesfin was supposed to be “retired about two years ago.”

There is no formal indication as to who is taking over as the CEO of what has now become Africa’s biggest Airline.

However, there is unconfirmed report that Lema Yadecha, who has been working in the marketing division, is taking over the role. If true, he is said to have 25 years of employment experience in the Airlines including in a senior marketing position.

Under the watch of Mesfin Tassew, and in just a few years, Ethiopian Airlines expanded its international destinations in Asia, Europe and the Gulf region among others. It has also acquired several new planes including Air Bus 350.

In the ending fiscal year, the airlines generated a record high of $7.6 billion. Also, the airlines continued to receive accolades for service excellence both for passengers and cargo services.

Mesfin Tassew also oversaw the launch of a ten billion dollar mega airport to be constructed in the Bishoftu area, just about 44 kilometers south east of the capital Addis Ababa.

  1. What a genius! I’m 100% sure that when he goes on a well deserved retirement, he will pass the baton to another genius just as the late Emperor set it up. He left it alone to be run by very capable CEO’s when created the esteemed airline in 1946. Mengistu was said to have tried to change that tradition and talked about to running it but he changed his mind because he was too dumb to comprehend the macro economics of airline business.
