Toronto – The Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), under Debretsion Gebremichal, seems to be making a political comeback as it is making a move to change officials in the South zone of Tigray region. Tadesse Worede’s Interim Administration appears to be aligning more and more with the TPLF interest.
Getachew Reda, former president of the Interim Administration, is vehemently opposing the move. A faction the armed forces in that has been organizing itself in the Afar region of Ethiopia as “Tigray Peace Force” is also opposing the TPLF move and has exchanged fire, at least in two occasions, against Derbretsion’s forces – apparently inreasing resorting to forceful measure to reclaim power in South Tigray.
Getachew Reda is currently serving in a Federal government position as the Prime Minister’s Advisor on Horn of Africa Affairs. He and dozens of others former senior central committee of the TPLF who opposed Debretsion’s move, who has also officially aligned with the Eritrean government, have formed a new political party – Semeret. They intend to contest the TPLF in the Tigray region.
The tension between the two groups is not showing signs of ease. Getachew’s remark on the TPLF move in South Tigray rather suggests that the risk of full fledged conflict in the region is still high.
