Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – Yeneante Alehegn, a member of the Debre Birhan City Administration Council, North Shewa Zone, Amhara region of Ethiopia reportedly killed.

Yesterday evening, August 6, Yeneante Alehegn, the chairman of the city administration’s Economic, Budget, and Finance Standing Committee, was assassinated close to his residence in Debre Birhan.

According to reports, the council member was shot and killed at the scene. The perpetrators’ identities are still unknown.

In a condolence statement, the Debre Birhan City Administration acknowledged the death but described the death as a “sudden accident,” without identifying the attackers or the nature of the attack.

There have been numerous nightly murders in the Amhara region, which is currently the scene of fighting between Fano and government forces. The pattern of assassinations in the area is similar to this incident. The head of the Delanta District Administration, Getahun Ayale Birru, was killed three weeks ago by “unidentified forces,” according to his office.

In the first week of July, Captain Hussein Beshir, head of the Argoba Special District Peace and Security Office, was also killed.

A shadowy group known as the “Fanowing” is believed to be the “unknown force” behind a wave of attacks and assassinations targeting government officials in the region.

Fano forces have claimed responsibility for these clandestine operations, which have strategically targeted urban areas to confront government officials. District officials have been a primary target in these frequent occurrences.
