Implementation of the Pretoria Agreement a precondition for disarming the forces in Tigray

Toronto – Tigray Interim President, Tadesse Worede, is putting a condition for disarming forces in the Tigray region of Ethiopia.
According to DW Amharic published on Monday, Tadesse wants to see the implementation of the Pretoria agreement including a formal demobilization and reintegration to the communities of the forces.
Recently, Defense Chief of Staff, Berhanu Jula, made claims during an event organized in Jimma that the TPLF has not disarmed its heavy weaponry.
One of the core provisions of the Pretoria Agreement which ended the bloody two years war between the Federal government and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) was disarming the TPLF forces. At the time of the agreement, there was no indication if the TPLF had demanded a condition for disarming its forces.
The president has also remarked on the military training underway in the region. He is cited as saying “the military training is not preparation for war or a preparation for a military mission. As long as the forces are there, training will continue.”
Furthermore, Tadesse linked the prospect of lasting peace to whether or not “Tigray’s Demand” is addressed or not. “Tigray’s demands are clear/ Tigray’s territory should return to where it was[ before the conflict], all displaced people have to be returned,” he added, according to DW Amharic report. The Federal government has been accusing the TPLF and affiliated political forces in the region for “exploiting the circumstances of displaced people for political gains.” It claims that it has always wanted to return the IDPs but the players in Tigray, a reference to the TPLF, have been standing in the way for political purposes.
For Tadesse, the onus is on the part of the Federal government to ensure that there are no issues that could serve as a cause for war and circumstances that call for the “Tigray forces” not to be dissolved.
However, Tadeses Worede himself is getting criticisms over the situation in Tigray. General Tsadkan Gebretensae, former Defense Chief of Staff and prominent TPLF member who served since the time of the organization’s guerrilla war in the late 70’s, says Tadesse lacks will and determination to resolve the problems in the Tigray region of Ethiopia. He also questioned the intention of the Federal government in appointing Taddese as interim president.
The accusations are also coming from political parties. Most of the ethnic Tigray Opposition parties operating in the region tend to see Tadesse Worede as too close to the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), and are serving their interest.
The Interim Administration, and the TPLF, is facing a resistance movement from the opposition forces.
