Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – Four Ethiopian opposition parties have issued a joint statement expressing their sorrow over the deaths of Ethiopian migrants who drowned off the coast of Yemen.

The parties—the All Ethiopian Unity Party, the Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Party, the Enat Party, and the Amhara Ghionawit Movement Party—released the statement today.

The tragedy occurred after a boat carrying 154 Ethiopian migrants capsized in bad weather off the southern coast of Yemen. This statement from the opposition parties comes a day after the International Organization for Migration (IOM) announced on Sunday, August 3, that a boat carrying the migrants had sunk in Yemen’s Abyan province.

According to local health officials, at least 68 people—54 Ethiopians and one Yemeni—have been confirmed dead. The fate of 74 others remains unknown, while only 12 people survived the incident.

The opposition parties linked the root causes of this situation to several issues within Ethiopia, including a lack of employment opportunities for youth, inequality, and the “war-mongering nature” of the current ruling Prosperity Party. The parties also appealed to the country’s youth to avoid such perilous journeys, despite the “hopeless situation” in Ethiopia.

As of now, the Ethiopian government has not made any official statement regarding the matter.
