Toronto – Ethiopia’s this year Green Legacy initiative was implemented this week. The “Prosperity Party” government claimed 700 million trees were planted in a single day across the country.
“We kicked off this year’s one-day #GreenLegacy planting early this morning. Our goal for the 7th year: 700 million seedlings. Let’s achieve it together!,” Abiy Ahmed wrote on his social media page.
The program started early in the morning and was underway until the evening.
The accuracy of the claim of 700 million trees in a single day is not verified by independent entities. The Ethiopian government under Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has repeatedly demonstrated a tendency to report exaggerated numbers. Last year, his government made claims that over 3 million jobs were created in a matter of nine months.
The number is even worse in the case of the Green Legacy initiatives, a flagship policy initiative which is now in its 7th year. Ministerial departments and staff, among other government structures, were mobilized for the campaign.
As well, the diplomatic community, private sector employees and staff from international organizations took part in this year’s Green Legacy Initiative.
This year, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni was in the country for a FAO summit. She took part in the tree planting campaign.
“Green Legacy is becoming an Ethiopian culture. Ethiopia’s image is changing, so is Ethiopia’s history. It is also changing the image of the world,” Abiy wrote at the conclusion of this year’s tree planting.
Apart from prevention of environmental degradation, officials see merit in the initiative in terms of agricultural productivity.
