Toronto – Tadesse Worede led Tigray Interim Administration is alleging that armed group that calls itself “Hara Meret” has attacked the region’s security forces.
Tigray Region Bureau of Peace and Security has released a statement on Thursday in Tigrigna language in which it accused Hara Meret which it linked with what used to be a faction of the TPLF, currently operating as Semret Party.
The office claimed the group attacked Tigray security forces in Melazat locality on Wednesday. The TPLF forces under Debretsion Gebremichal have armed forces stationed in the area.
It called the alleged attack, “terrorist attack.”
One Tigray region security force was reportedly killed in the attack.
The office also made other allegations. It said the group is getting financial support from foreign powers but the identity of this forces is left rather blurry. The office also alleges that Hara Group received orders from Semeret Party.
The group is reportedly operating in the Afar region. Tadesse Worede’s administration warned the Tigray regional state to refrain from actions that will harm the relations between Afar and Tigray people.
TPLF’s claim of attack is not independently verified.
Getachew Reda, former interim president of the region, has responded to the allegation from Tigray Region Bureau of Peace and Security.
He , on his part, made a counter allegation that Tigray Region Bureau of Peace and Security is part of a criminal network that “endangers the existence of Tigray.”
Regarding the alleged link between the Hara Meret armed group and the Semret Party, Getachew said his party does not have an army or finance an armed group.
Hara Meret armed group is said to be operating along the Tigray and Afar region boundaries. The group alleges that the TPLF is prepared to start another war in the region while the region can no longer afford to be a war zone.
The group emerged in response to, according to reports, Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) forceful takeover of administration in the region.
It also opposes the new political and military alliance between the TPLF and the Eritrean government.
Hara Meret forces do not seem to have the military power to challenge the forces under the control of Debretsion led TPLF – something that could possibly explain why the armed group is not operating from within the Tigray region.
