Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – A coalition of opposition parties Caucus has issued a public call to action, urging citizens to pressure the government.

The parties, organized under the Opposition Political Parties Caucus, issued a joint statement accusing the ruling Prosperity Party of plunging the Ethiopian people into a cycle of civil war and an existential crisis.

In a statement titled “There is no profitable war, no losing peace; let the war end, and let peace and democracy prevail,” the parties addressed several national issues. They claimed that the crisis in Ethiopia has strained the relationship between the government and the public in most regions, particularly in Amhara, Oromia, and Tigray.

The parties argued that this weakened relationship has led to a popular struggle for existence and democracy, and they oppose the idea of holding elections amidst the current crisis. They stated that it’s impossible to consider the 7th national election, which is scheduled for  next year, under such a severe state of chaos.

Accusing the ruling Prosperity Party of leading Ethiopia into its current problems, the opposition parties claimed that the government has hijacked the independence of the Electoral Board. As evidence, they cited changes in the leadership of the board and amendments to the law, which they believe threaten the upcoming election.

“Unless the board’s legal procedures and institutional problems are resolved before the next election, the idea of preparing for an election becomes meaningless,” they declared.

The parties called for a unified effort to ensure the country’s survival, stating that in the face of the national chaos, “a common task of ensuring the country’s existence has fallen upon us, which does not distinguish anyone from anyone else for any reason.” To reverse the threat to Ethiopia, establish lasting peace, and advance free elections and democracy, they have called for a public struggle to put pressure on the ruling party.

The parties have asked the public to join them in this struggle, which they say they will conduct both domestically and on the international stage.

Invoking the legacy of the EPRDF, which they say led the country to its current predicament through its refusal to listen, the parties called for unity to prevent the Prosperity Party’s “stubbornness and arrogance” from pushing Ethiopia into a deeper abyss. They issued a call to “unite and rise with determination,” urging all peaceful political forces to come together without preconditions.

The opposition parties also called on the government to be ready for an inclusive, participatory, credible, and acceptable national consensus and dialogue that would make all parties winners. They warned the government to recognize that its primary responsibility is to ensure the country’s peace and stability, and to “disengage itself from the destructive actions of foreign supporters and turn back from the path of destruction it has taken.”

Finally, they urged unnamed foreign actors to withdraw their “destructive interference” in Ethiopia.

  1. Would somebody please list the names of these groups so we can find more about them? The image above is so blurred their names is not legible. I assume they are legally recognized political groups and nothing to hide. Please list their names.

    Blessings!
