Toronto – Ethiopia and Italy are cohosting the UN Food Systems Summit +4 ((UNFSS) in Addis Ababa. This is the second summit since its establishment in 2021.
The event will be held between July 27 and July 29. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni arrived in the country on Sunday. Several heads of states from other African countries, including from Kenya and Somalia, have arrived in Addis Ababa to attend the event.
When UNFSS was launched in New York City in 2021, its aim was reported to be transforming “the world’s agrifood systems to make them more efficient, inclusive, resilient, and sustainable, as an effort to accelerate progress towards Sustainable Development Goal 2: Zero Hunger (SDG 2),” according to FAO report.
This year’s summit will be reflecting on the progress made over the past four years, strengthen collaboration t o speed up “food systems transformation,” among other things.
Policy Brief from Ethiopia’s Institute of Foreign Affairs says UNFSS+4 “presents a pivotal opportunity to advance these objectives,.” The institute argues securing “food sovereignty” through transforming the global food system requires “addressing the fundamental question of control.” And it takes stakeholders active engagement on the basis of international cooperation to address the systems of control, it added.
This Year’s event is organized by the African Hall of the African Union Headquarters. Among the programs scheduled for the first day in the summit are Ministerial round tables, high level panels, investment dialogues, Small and Medium Enterprises Pitching session, and stake holders actions sessions, among others.
Ethiopia’s Green Legacy Initiative is included in the second day event. A tree planting session by leaders attending the summit.
