Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) Coordination Project Office held a press conference today, July 22, to provide clarification on the dam’s completion and future support needs in Addis Ababa.

During the briefing, regarding the lack of a direct response to comments made by President Donald Trump, Fikerte Teamer, Deputy Executive Director of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam Coordination Project Office, stated that it was “not out of fear or timidity, but rather the government’s diplomatic approach.”

The Executive Director of The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) Coordination Project also mentioned in her statement that “evidence can be presented, not just words.” She further explained, “Any party can review and verify the documentary evidence.”

Last Friday, President Donald Trump stated for the third time in a month that the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) was built with U.S. financial assistance. He has made this claim on numerous occasions, asserting that the GERD was largely funded by American money. At a White House dinner, he reportedly said, “Ethiopia built a dam mostly with American money.” He also previously claimed on Truth Social that the “massive Ethiopian-built dam” was “stupidly financed by the United States of America” and that it “substantially reduces the water flowing into The Nile River.” These claims indicate he has made this assertion at least three times in a single month.

Trump’s 2020 remarks, suggesting that Egypt might ‘blow up’ the dam, were a major point of contention that heightened tensions between Egypt and Ethiopia and drew strong condemnation from the Ethiopian government.

Ethiopia emphasizes that it contributes 85% of the flow of the Nile River and claims the right to use its waters for its own development. Ethiopia maintains that this use is carried out without endangering the interests of downstream countries, such as Egypt and Sudan.
