ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia – A government official has reportedly been killed in the South Wollo Zone of the Amhara Region. This is the second incident in the region in less than a week.
It has been reported that “unidentified forces” killed the head of the Delanta Woreda (District) Office in the South Wollo Zone. The zone has been relatively safe in terms of assasination of government officials. That seems to be chinging.
The Delanta District Administration Office announced that its head, Getahun Ayale Birru, was killed near his home by “unknown forces.” The Delanta Woreda Administration Council confirmed in a statement of condolence that the official was killed by unknown forces.
The assassination took place last Saturday, July 19 at 6:20 A.M. local time. The District administration stated that the official was killed approximately 50 meters from his residence and indicated that he was hit by a bullet fired from a distance.
The administration provided no further details beyond stating that a bullet fired by “unidentified armed force” killed the official. However, there are unconfirmed reports that Fano forces killed the official. Fano forces have been warning government officials across the Amhara region to not collaborate with government forces in what they call “war on Amhara.”
It has been previously stated that the Fano wing is the “unknown force” that carries out attacks and assassinations targeting government officials in the region. The Fano forces themselves have repeatedly confirmed that the attackers described as “unknown forces” are Fano elements operating clandestinely.
They largely infiltrate cities to confront government forces and officials. Assassinations by “unknown forces” have become a recurring incident across cities across the region. District officials are special targets. The Fano forces have been in control of more than 80 percent of the Amhara region of Ethiopia, mostly districts and rural areas.
Last week, borkena about a high-ranking district official in the zone who was killed in a shootout. Captain Hussein Beshir, head of the Argoba Special District Peace and Security Office, was killed during a shootout.
