Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – The Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) claims the Ethiopian Federal Government is threatening a new invasion of Tigray, a move the group warns is increasing “fear and anxiety” among the region’s citizens.
The party’s statement asserted that the people of Tigray are living in “extremely dire conditions” due to the “genocide” they suffered. It further noted that those who survived the genocide are still being killed by invaders and dying from disease and starvation. The statement, however, failed to mention who these alleged invaders were.
The party announced in a statement that even after the signing of the Pretoria Agreement, the genocidal campaign against the people has not stopped, and that those under the control of the “invaders” are still being killed, abducted, and tortured based on their identity.
The TPLF further stated that the people of Tigray are patiently struggling for their demands to be met through peaceful political means. It added that instead of understanding the suffering of the Tigrayan people and the price they are paying for peace, the Ethiopian government is still threatening the Tigrayan people with another round of invasion.
The statement further alleged the Ethiopian government of arming militants from various places to harass Tigray and divert attention from the main agenda and urged the international community to recognize that these actions are entirely irresponsible and contradict the Pretoria Agreement.
The party urged in a statement that the federal government should refrain from posing further threats to Tigray and instead fulfill its obligations under the Pretoria Agreement by contributing its part to the reconstruction of Tigray.
Regarding the matter, local media reported that Tigray Interim Administration President, Lieutenant General Tadesse Worede, held a discussion with the people of Wukro, Tigray regional state, yesterday and gave the following response to a question raised about the overall security situation.
“We’re training our army, but we’re not preparing for war. We won’t start the war unless the federal government does,” Tadesse said.
The opposition army formed under the name Netse Meret, literally translated as ‘Free Land’ is “insignificant”, Tadesse added.
We’re working for a negotiated solution regarding those supported by Afar and the federal government,” he stated.
This allegation however is not independently verified. The Afar regional government and the Federal government have not officially replied to this allegation.
In an with the BBC last month, Lieutenant General Gebregziabher Beyene (Wedi Antiru), one of the commanders of the ‘Free Land’ militant forces, stated that their force is organized.
Gebregziabher said that his forces are organized into four divisions and their main objective is to overthrow the TPLF, which he claims carried out a military coup, and to build an independent military force not led by any political organization.
Recently, it is known that clashes occurred between Tigrayan forces and other armed groups in the district of Wejerat in the Tigray region.
The Pretoria Agreement ended a brutal two-year war between government forces and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), but the TPLF leadership is now notably divided.
The Interim Administration that governed Tigray following the agreement was headed by Getachew Reda, who is currently the Prime Minister’s Advisor on East African Affairs. Getachew’s appointment was opposed by Dr. Debretsion Gebremichael. Lieutenant General Tadesse Worede recently took Getachew Reda’s place, and it’s unclear how Tadesse’s faction and Dr. Debretsion’s TPLF faction are related.
It’s worth noting that Getachew Reda recently established a new political party, the Tigray Democratic Solidarity, also known as Simeret. On May 26, 2025, the National Election Board of Ethiopia (NEBE) granted the party provisional registration. It is presently pursuing full registration and holding its founding congress.
“The Pretoria Agreement has brought much-needed relief to Tigray by ending daily loss of life and restoring peace, while also fostering a new national approach by engaging former combatants for unity,” Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed said in his July 3, 2025, parliamentary address.
Abiy also stated that the federal government was committed to peace despite persistent difficulties and “misguided” expectations of foreign intervention. He emphasized that Tigray needs dialogue, not war, and urged all Ethiopians to support national dialogue for enduring peace. He also called on religious leaders and elders to help defuse tensions.
Many are concerned that the recent direct confrontation in Tigray could lead to another bloody civil war in the region. The Tigray War, which began on November 3, 2020, and concluded exactly two years later on November 3, 2022, resulted in the displacement of millions and the loss of thousands of lives.

Abiy Ahmed will not dare start another war with the regional power Tigray because he knows that ssuch a move will end his rule in Ethiopia. His Oeomo dominated army is bogged down in the Amhara region and losing the war agianst hodgepodge fano forces. It can not fight against amodern and well trained army as the TDF is. But one can not rule out a crazy decision by Ahmed to go to war with the regional powers Tigray or Eritrea. Then it will be like the Tigrayan saying `a mouse that wanted death and smelled the nose of a cat`. The Oromos should feel secured because Tigray is committed to Oromia which is its gify to the Oromo people.
Ankola Ras,
Don’t tell me you forgot the recent 3 war were the king at 4 Kilo not only defeated TPLF Rats but also humiliated them in the eyes of the world after all that EMBUR EMBUR EMBUR. He even outsmarted the Eritrean gang and made him fight with his own former team mates (TPLF) He took their money, their cars, their stolen houses, their ego, Even Getachew Reda is now a little b****c after all those miscalculations and hate…., You know that. How come your ego still alive, it supposed to be dead by now. You didn’t win a war while you had all the banks and the tanks, now you are less powerful than the backward FANO…. i personally opposed the Pretoria agreement, ET Gov’t should have runover TPLF on a battle and deal with the world… enough with your Gura, focus on securing your food and cloths, people are still starving were you want to fight…
Swallow the bitter fact. It was the Biden administration who pressed the withdrawal of TDF from the vicinity of Addis Ababa and saved your talkative boss Abiy Ahmed. The inolvement of the Eritrean and Amhara forces in the Tigray wars is the fact you do not want to acknowledge. The Oromo dominated army surrendered en masse in Tigray following the famous Alula Aba Nega counter offensives. Oromia is the gift of Tigray to the Oromo people and the TDF will not let it down.
Teddy Red Line, I completely agree with your take. Abiy should have destroyed all the TPLF leadership; he should have cut the head off the snake that constantly poisons Ethiopia. Digital Tegaru is so brainwashed he makes the Eritrean social media mouthpieces look sane. The Ethiopian federal govt was too kind in showing mercy to the TPLF because here they are causing more issues and neglecting the innocent Tigrayans that deserve peace, development and healing. Look at the current TPLF all divided and fighting amongst each other. TPLF vs TPF; Abiy broke them! Getachew is siding with the federal govt and Ethiopia! Let that sink into your propagandist self. Tigray didn’t give Oromia nothing but spies and assassinations.
You are ungrateful. True Oromos acknowledge and are grateful to Tigray for liberating Oromia and organizing it as a self rule and free region. Tigrayan forces libertaed Oromia and other regions from Amhara colobial rule and ushered them into an era of federalism and democratic rule.
Anbessa!
100%
Digital Tigraway always wake up on the wrong side of his bed, he always believes TPLF gave Oromia its freedom? Its ok confusion happens when you look up to people like Gecho, Debretion and their crew. Someone must tell them propaganda works but they went too far to the point they came up with democracy in Ethiopia, In reality… Murderers, cowards, hateful to their own country. It was king Yohanes of Tigray who made Amharic official language and our flag Green Yellow and Red. Not the Amharas like most of Tigray youth believes and hated Amhara to the point massacre the poor and the helpless. TPLF worked for foreign governments in those 27 years while stealing everything they can because everything they did was opposite of what they should have been doing as a leader of such big country they got by mistake… #NO MORE
May God destroy each TPLF insects of off my country! This is very evil group. F*** everything, Ethiopian gov’t should destroy these cancers and move on… how come such beautiful country dragged by these idiots? For how long? Death to TPLF and its supporters!
Getachew Reda doesn’t seem serious. Just always talking and doing something unimportant. It is a good example of how Tigray failed.
