U.S. Foreign Aid to Ethiopia to Continue Under New Structure

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – The U.S. Embassy in Addis Ababa announced that the United States will continue its critical USAID programs in Ethiopia, focusing on humanitarian aid, global health, and food security. These programs, which include USAID’s regional operations, will transition to new structures within the State Department starting July 1, 2025, under a bilateral assistance agreement with the Ethiopian government.

In a statement released yesterday, the embassy explained that this realignment, enacted under President Trump and Secretary Rubio, aims to better serve U.S. national interests through foreign assistance. “This transition was designed to reduce duplication, strengthen accountability, and better align assistance programs with U.S. foreign policy and national security objectives,” the statement read.

According to the statement, USAID’s regional operations will also transition to corresponding State Department bureaus, ensuring a continued focus on regionally responsive aid delivery. This move, as stated in the statement, is part of a broader initiative to streamline the worldwide delivery of life-saving assistance.

Earlier in June, Borkena reported that U.S. Ambassador to Ethiopia Ervin Massinga addressed the continuation of U.S. humanitarian aid, particularly in light of previous cuts to USAID programs. The Ambassador revealed that the majority of assistance is being reinstated. “Eighty-nine percent of the previously programmed humanitarian aid will continue. Seventy-seven percent of total aid is still available to us,” he stated, where he remarked the ongoing U.S. support will address healthcare, agriculture, and for internally displaced persons (IDPs).

Ambassador Massinga also gave explanations regarding a strategic shift in U.S. engagement, moving towards private sector development. “We’re moving from assistance to private sector engagement,” he explained, citing existing partnerships with Ethiopian Airlines and Boeing, as well as support for infrastructure projects like the new Bishoftu airport.

  1. Good Ole U SA never hesitates to stand shoulder to shoulder with the old country. Amid all this cuts, USA never turned away its helping hands from that gem of the colored and humanity. Right on H.E. Ambassador Massinga and Secretary of State H.E. Marco Rubio!!! Ethiopia has been the highest receiver of financial and material help from the USA for more than 33 years. That amounts to hundreds of millions in US dollars. So what does that mean? It means the old country have had the ability to divert part of its budget from domestic spending bills to other big national projects. Therefore, when we think about USA generosity we should think about the fringe benefits that come with it. Let’s not take it literally. Right on, USA!!!
