EZEMA Second Party Congress

Borkena

Toronto – Ethiopian Citizens For Social Justice (EZEMA), one of the major political parties  in the country, undertook its second party congress.

Decision from the congress is yet to be announced. Although the party started as a promising political party, it lost support base fast over alleged collaboration with the ruling party ditching its role as an opposition party.

Apart from losing support base, hundreds of senior party members including in leadership roles left the party.

The party tends to portray its relation with the ruling party as having an arm’s length relation. PM Abiy Ahmed himself has attempted to paint that same image at least twice during his public appearance, referring to the leader of EZEMA , who is a member of the ruling party cabinet as Minister for Education.

EZEMA sees itself as a “responsible opposition party.”  The slogan it adopted for its second congress reads “we compete on ideas; we collaborate for the nation.”

Notably, a few senior members of the party were arrested by the ruling party on alleged grounds of “terrorism.”

  1. The armed Fano Amhara movement has eroded the support base of parties like Ezema which is also a mainly Amhara party. Berhanu Nega is now rejected in the Amhara region and will face a downslide in the coming election unlsess Abiy Ahmed grants him some seats in the false parliament.
