Toronto – Ethiopian Defense Force’s “Operation Tide” against Fano forces in the Amhara region of Ethiopia is now on its sixth day.
While Fano forces have been reporting military gains in the past few day through Ethiopian Media outlets based outside of the country, the defense force made no remarks.
It is only on Wednesday that it shared a major update claiming that it has “annihilated” 83 “members of extremists” ( reference to Fano) and wounded 39 others.
In a news release shared on its social media page, the defense force indicated that the operations were in South Gondar and Gojjam areas of the Amhara region.
Defense force called its operations in the above areas “coordinated” between the Eastern Command and combat support units during the operations between June 25 and July 1.
Apart from the casualties, the defense force also claimed that 20 volunteers have “surrendered” and a total of 19 others, including “suspects” of robbery, were captured.
The Defense force also announced that it had destroyed five motor bikes and 1 tuk tuk as it was “chasing” the “extremists.” In terms of firearms, 22 AK 47, 11 outdated rifles, 1 Dshk with 85 ammunition, 158 AK 47 ammunition and 10 magazines, 5 hand grenades, 1 handgun.
The defense force did not specify if there were casualties on its part.

In an update shared on social media, Asre Mare, executive member of Amhara Fano National Force (AFNF), shared images of five burned motor vehicles in a way confirming the claims of the defense force that it has indeed destroyed them. Yet, the Defense force did not share the picture of the motor vehicles, probably suggesting that they were hit from a distance and the defense force was not in a position to take a picture of it. It appears that the motor vehicles were destroyed in an operation in the Gojjam area. From the picture he shared, the ruins of the motor vehicles are seen rather in an open space without any camouflages.
The Fano forces in Gojjam reported battle against government forces in 42 fronts and they say they have successfully reversed the “operation tide.”
The rest of the defense for claims seems to be at lest questionable as Fano forces are making counter claims of victory. According to local news sources, Fano forces completely pillaged two military camps in Belesa, Gonder area, killing unspecified.
In Enfra, still in Gondar, a strange development is reported. About 60 heavily armed government forces disappeared, according to Ethio Focus. Fano has not yet reported if they have joined them.
In the Lasta and Raya area, Fano forces have reported a definitive military win, one that enabled them to control areas including towns for several days.
In light of the Defense force claim that it has nihilated about 90 percent of “extremists,” what Fano forces reported over the past few days seems to be a significant development which suggests that the rebels groups are still proving insurmountable forces. The operation in the Amhara region was intended to be completed only within a few weeks when the federal government announced it in August 2023. Yet, the impact of the war on civilians in the region has been disasterous as it has ravaged livelihood and families. Extensive rights abuse by government forces were reported by human rights group although the government denies it.
