Toronto – Two people are reportedly killed and two others wounded due to a fire accident at Hawassa Industrial Park. The incident occurred on Tuesday.
According to local news sources which cited Sidama region’s security office, the victims of the accident are employees.
The fire accident was caused by an “explosion of a water heater” in the Industrial Park. Hamid Ahmed, the region’s Security Office Press Public Relation’s Directorate, is quoted as saying “Due to the fire accident from yesterday around 2 o’clock [that is 8 a.m. local time] two persons are killed and one is in hospital.” But later the CEO of the Park said the number of those who were wounded were 2. However, it is unspecified if their condition is life threatening.
TIK Vah cited Matheos Ashenafi, CEO of Hawassa Industrial Park, as saying that the accident was in Shade 40 where a water boiler exploded.
The technicians of the water boiler were undertaking their regular work when the boiler exploded.
The two victims who were killed in the accident were 62 and 45 years of age. Both are males and had reportedly been working in the sector for over six years. It appears that allegations that the victims did not have experience in the work have been circulating on social media but the CEO dismissed it as “absolutely wrong.”
Investigation into the cause of the explosion is reportedly underway , according to sources.
It is for the first time for an accident of this magnitude to happen in the park which was launched in 2016.
Over 18 global apparel manufactures are operating at the Hawassa Industrial Park house. As many as 29,000 employees work at the Park.
