Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – Mahibere Kidusan, the Sunday School Department of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church, has continued its humanitarian mission by providing vital assistance to those impacted by a catastrophic landslide in Kencho Shacha Gozdi Kebele, Gaze Gofa Woreda, Gofa Zone. The latest support, delivered on June 22, 2025, included essential household items and clothing for displaced families.
The landslide, which struck on July 15, 2024, reportedly affected more than 1,100 people, destroying over 200 homes and leaving numerous families without shelter or access to basic necessities, according to local media and humanitarian reports. The disaster is part of a troubling trend in Ethiopia, where heavy seasonal rains frequently trigger landslides in mountainous and deforested areas.
Multiple humanitarian organizations have since mobilized to respond to the disaster. According to the Ethiopian Red Cross Society, emergency tents, blankets, and clean water supplies were among the first resources deployed. Additionally, the National Disaster Risk Management Commission (NDRMC) and regional government offices coordinated with NGOs to provide temporary resettlement and food aid.
Mahibere Kidusan’s earlier response, made in August 2024, included the distribution of roofing sheets and school supplies valued at over 1.2 million Ethiopian Birr, and their continued support—now totaling more than 700,000 Birr—has come through the financial help of Mahibere Wold Ze North America, an arm of the organization’s diaspora network.
However, despite these efforts, several victims have come forward expressing frustration over what they describe as “delayed and insufficient” government support. Local media reported that at least seven individuals who publicly criticized the government’s response were detained by authorities, who were later said to have been released.
As Ethiopia continues to face climate-related disasters, the situation in Gofa underscores the pressing need for improved early warning systems, long-term resettlement plans, and protections for those who speak out on behalf of marginalized communities.
