Attacks of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church and the massacre of monks recurs in the Oromia region of Ethiopia

Toronto – Several monks in Zequala Monastery are reportedly killed and several others abducted as militants operating in Oromia region of Ethiopia unleash another round of attacks.
Mahibere Kidusan Media, one of the leading information sources for information on the Ethiopian Church, on Sunday reported that it has received the information from the monastery. The source said it is working on getting more details about the incident.
What is confirmed is that the incident occurred on June 22. Zequala Monastry is in a range of less than 60 kilometers from the capital Addis Ababa.
Enat Party, one of the vocal leading opposition parties in Ethiopia, on Monday released a brief statement on its social media page regarding the incident.
“Our party strongly condemns the massacre of the hermits and conveys deep condolences. We demand the unconditional release of those who were abducted,” Enat party said.
The party sees the recurring massacre of members of the monastic community and attacks on the Ethiopian Orthodox Church as one that emanates from hate narratives towards religion and also as part of the work to shake the foundations of Ethiopia as a country and “erect a house” (apparently a reference to the formation of the ambition to establish Oromia Republic) on the demise of Ethiopia.
The party also condemned Oromia regional state and federal government authorities for failing to respond to rescue calls from the monastery pretending they have not heard anything. It also accused them of duplicity and complicity which manifested itself by way of covering up the massacres. “We would like to inform them that they will not escape from being held accountable,” Enat Party said.
Zequala Monastery has experienced recurring attacks from militant groups operating in the region whom the government refers to as “Shena.” The group calls itself the Oromo Liberation Army. In February 2024, at least four monks were hacked to death after they were taken from the monastery by militant groups.
The pattern of attacking the Ethiopian Orthodox Church, brutally killing monks and priests, and massacring followers persisted over the past six years across the Oromia region of Ethiopia.
