Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – Leaders from the Unity Party Alliance announced today that they visited political prisoners in Qilinto and Kality prisons on Sunday, June 22.
The delegation included leaders from the Enat Party , All Ethiopian Unity Party (AEUP), Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Party (EPRP), and Amhara Giyonawe National Movement (AGNM) parties, along with several lawyers.
During their visit, the alliance leaders met with a number of prominent political figures and journalists, including ” Christian Tadele, Taye Denda’a, Dr. Wendesen Assefa, Dr. Chane Kebede, Dr. Kassa Teshager, Ato Yohannes Beyalew, Assistant Professor Sisay Awgchew, Dr. Tewodros H/Mariam, lawyer Aleligne Mihretu, Chanyalew Zeyede, journalist Dawit Begashaw, journalist Gobeze Sisay, journalist Abay Zewdu, teacher and journalist Meskerem Abera, and journalist Genet Asmamaw.
“The leaders expressed their gratitude and encouragement to the prisoners for the sacrifices they have made and continue to make for their country and people,” the statement read. The prisoners, in turn, “expressed their happiness at being visited by the Unity Party Alliance leaders.”
The statement emphasized that while only a few names were mentioned, “it is a well-known fact that thousands of unnamed Ethiopians are suffering in various detention and torture centers, abducted simply for their political views, identity, and freedom of expression.”
The Unity Alliance leaders affirmed their commitment to continuing “such sacred acts” of visiting prisoners. They also stated that “keeping such an important collection of individuals for the country in prison is an indication that Ethiopia has not yet overcome the authoritarian obsession that has afflicted it, and that the current system, like its predecessors, is terribly afraid of ideas.”
The alliance called on various national and international bodies, including “the Ethiopian National Election Board, the Ethiopian Human Rights Commission, human rights organizations, political parties, embassies, and the media, to make this issue an agenda and demand action.” They particularly urged the public to “regularly visit victims of injustice and their families who are facing many difficulties, as this is not something that can be postponed.”
The leaders requested the government to release the intellectuals and journalists it has imprisoned for their political views.
