We Unequivocally Condemn The Decision By  FDRE Government That Excluded Addis Ababa City From Its Annual 2018EC Federal Government Budget Plan

Arada Hibret
PRESS RELEASE

We, the members of Arada Hibret, unequivocally condemn the Ethiopian  federal government’s recent decision to exclude Addis Ababa from its annual  budget plan. This unilateral action is not only a violation of the legal framework  that guarantees fiscal support and self-governance to Addis Ababa, but it also  constitutes a grievous assault on the basic human rights and sovereignty of its  residents.

Historically, Addis Ababa has been an integral part of Ethiopia’s federal  structure, receiving the necessary resources to support its development,  stability, and the wellbeing of its people. The exclusion from the federal budget is  an outright breach of this arrangement and a clear indication of the regime’s  contempt for the city’s autonomy and its people’s aspirations. Such actions  undermine the city’s economic independence and threaten to unravel the social  fabric that holds Addis Ababa together.

The current regime’s unlawful measures—illegally amending the Addis  Ababa Charter and making decisions that contradict the will of its residents—are  blatant violations of both Ethiopia’s constitution and international human rights  conventions. The apparent intention to annex Addis Ababa into Oromia, against  the expressed will of its residents, is a disservice to democracy and a breach of  the residents’ fundamental rights to self-governance.

It is deeply disappointing that opposition parties and mainstream media  have remained silent or passive in the face of this suffering. Their silence only  emboldens the regime’s unlawful actions and prolongs the pain inflicted on Addis  Ababa’s residents.

We at Arada Hibret stand vehemently against this unjust exclusion. We call  upon the international community to recognize the gravity of this violation and  the potential for unrest it carries. The regime’s unlawful measures threaten to  ignite unrest and chaos within Addis Ababa—a situation that will be devastating  and difficult to remedy once it escalates.

We urge international organizations, governments, and human rights  advocates to exert pressure on the Ethiopian regime to cease these illegal  actions, respect Addis Ababa’s sovereignty, and uphold the fundamental rights of  its residents. The future of Addis Ababa as an autonomous, self-governing city  depends on immediate and decisive action against this injustice.

LONG LIVE ADDIS ABABA! LONG LIVE THE PURSUIT OF JUSTICE  AND SOVEREIGNTY!

  1. If Addis/Finfinne becomes part of Oromia, what is the problem with that? Even if its name is changed, what is wrong with that? Adama, Bishoftu were known by other rebadged names? One name is just as good as another. Renaming cities and even countries is not uncommon throughout the world. As long as the rights of residents are not violated, such measures will be just moot point. Let’s not make a big deal about it.
