Press Release
Addis Ababa – General Michael Langley, Commander of United States Africa Command (AFRICOM), visited Ethiopia this week. His visit to Ethiopia follows a June 19 trip to Camp Lemonier, Djibouti, for the Change of Command for the Combined Joint Task Force-Horn of Africa (CJTF-HOA). The mission of CJTF-HOA is to enhance partner nation capacity, promote regional stability, dissuade conflict, and protect U.S. and partner interests.
During his engagements with the Prime Minister and other senior Ethiopian officials, General Langley reaffirmed AFRICOM’s commitment to Ethiopia’s critical role in counterterrorism operations and regional security in the Horn of Africa. He emphasized that U.S. military engagement in Africa is based on enabling African-led solutions, strengthening capable institutions, and addressing the root causes of instability. AFRICOM works closely with African partners to counter terrorist organizations like al Shabaab and ISIS, which threaten U.S., regional, and international security. He noted that AFRICOM’s partnership with Ethiopia is part of a wider strategy to help African nations build resilient and self reliant security sectors.
General Langley met with African Union Commission Deputy Chairperson Ambassador Selma Malika Haddadi and officials from the AU Commission’s Political Affairs Peace and Security Commission to reiterate U.S. support for the AU’s important role in regional peace and security. General Langley also addressed the growing security threats across the continent, including the rise of terrorist activity in the Sahel and along West Africa’s coastal regions.
As General Langley prepares to conclude his command, the visit reaffirmed AFRICOM’s long-term commitment to its partnership with the continent and Ethiopia and to collective efforts for lasting security in the region.
