Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – Ethiopia and Denmark signed a substantial $238.4 million bilateral development agreement for the period of 2025-2029. This five-year program, marking one of Denmark’s largest global development aid initiatives, was formalized at a signing ceremony held at the Ministry of Finance.
Ethiopia’s State Minister of Finance, Semereta Sewasew, expressed gratitude for Denmark’s support, highlighting the program’s crucial timing as Ethiopia emerges from conflict and economic challenges. She emphasized the century-long friendship and shared commitment to building a better future, particularly for vulnerable families, young people seeking employment, and communities adapting to climate change. The program aligns with Ethiopia’s national plan and its people-centered development vision.
Ambassador Sune Krogstrup of the Royal Danish Embassy reiterated the strength of the bilateral relationship, noting that the agreement was developed in close partnership with the Ethiopian government. Key areas of support will include water, electricity, agriculture, social cohesion, and social safety nets.
Both officials highlighted the program’s focus on green growth, which resonates with Ethiopia’s Green Legacy Initiative, supporting climate-smart agriculture, forestry, and clean energy. Denmark’s emphasis on peace, human rights, and social cohesion also aligns with Ethiopia’s ongoing national dialogue process.
The agreement is expected to pave the way for deeper cooperation, with both countries reaffirming their commitment to the program’s success and its positive impact on the lives of Ethiopians.
