Toronto – Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed had a meeting with opposition party leaders on current affairs and other national issues.
The meeting took place on Wednesday in the office of the prime minister. As has been the case with the rest of the meetings in the past ten or so days, the participants spent a great deal of time praising the prime minister for projects.
Political parties from the Tigray region of Ethiopia, raised questions regarding the failure of the ruling party to respond to the TPLF whom they allege is working with Eritrea. Another young politician questioned why the Federal government did not want to support the youth in Tigray as they resisted the TPLF after the war ( the one between 2020-2022).
Questions were also raised in connection with the political space in the country which the prime minister justified with the “democracy is a practice” claim.
There were also representatives of political parties who walked out of the meeting. Four Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Party (EPRP) representatives said they were not given a chance to ask questions.

The prime minister must be congratulated for creating conditions for the-stage-for-all-party-discussion (Q &A) ‘political-culture’ in the nation, (similar to the Chinese (one) Party Congress. (with visible progress to show for unlike any PARTY on the planet.))
We Ethiopians are culturally used to all kinds of inclusive one-body one leadership committee community gathering such as እቁብ ፣ ጽዋ ማህበር ፣ እጽር ፣ ወዘተ that are designed to come together, pull resources together and help each other out in good times and bad. So such coming together to spread goodwill and togetherness is an integral part of Ethiopian culture that transcends tribe, language, religion and the lack of it.. and has worked beautifully to keep us together.
It is encouraging our old-cultural-gathering-functions are reintroduced into political-space. It is an oxymoron to think building Ethiopia requires each-grouping has to dig-in its hills to work in-opposition to each other’s ideas in the nation-building process.
This is an European phenomenon for the last 300 years or so ( they call it their ‘European value’, ) which the International-Bankers engraved into their ‘psyche’ after they help them get rid of the one-body governance system based on ‘kingdoms’, simply because the Bankers figured in this way they could to take the places of the ‘king’ and play the party-systems against one another (like a fiddle ) financially backing all but ‘help elected’ (appointing) those who put forward the Bankers-interest-first; openly seen in the Western political-theater in the last 10 years, that which they have always done in secrecy previously, totally out in the open since COVID-19.
I am sure many have picked up what the PM said repeatedly:
(a) let us work together on the issues where we agree on…
(b) strengthen your base, get together ( hinting the need for party amalgamations, mergers where possible to be strong and effective ).
(c) Marching forward together in a collaborative manner gets us to where we wish to get FASTER than the stop for skirmishes and go fashion, which will make our dreams just dreams that take longer to reach, if at all.
These are very strong unifying messages, at least on the surface, but requires taking concrete-first-steps, and I think those primary steps are already taken with 4 out of 20 ministerial cabinet positions being held by none PP party members, and 100 + senior managerial positions in the current government.
The matter that made many people’s blood boil regarding the recently introduced “Private ‘asset’ Ownership” legislation, has been CLARIFIED SUFFICIENTLY, by the PM this time, which in his own words ‘meant ONLY for HOUSING properties, that excludes LAND (which is prohibited by the ‘1975 land Act’).
Which SHOULD HAVE BEEN SPELLED OUT EXPLICITLY when the legislation was introduced…
I am sure the PM’s as well as the Legislative body’s COMMUNICATION OFFICE should take NOTE of the NEED to be CLEAR in their future Important announcements to the PUBLIC.
EPRP’s tantrum in walking-out of the meeting is very unfortunate, and serves no purpose! It is an invitation (not an entitled-to event), this is like walking out of a dinner party because what is served does not include your favorite dish…it is ludicrous.
Funny enough, I remember watching one of their earlier meetings with the PM (years ago, it was on YT) the PM said to EPRP leaders, “your refusal to compromise cost you the leadership role as a party, relegating you to an outsider position”; I am paraphrasing here…
Sadly, their recent actions show, ” …and still…”
Overall it was a good meeting in my opinion, with a lot of “let’s get together” theme spread out!!!
Hope the grownups will step forward and grab the torch, to move forward!
‘Time will tell!’
Be well
