Toronto – Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Party (EPRP) on Wednesday walked out of a meeting with Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed resisting what appears to be a discriminatory practice between opposition parties.

As part of a series of meetings with different sections of the population, the office of the prime minister scheduled the meeting with opposition parties  for Wednesday. A day before the meeting any entity scheduled to meet with the prime minister is required to visit prestigious urban projects Abiy Ahmed has been  undertaking including the “corridor development.” This has become like a customary practice for the prime minister.

Yishak Wolday, one of the four EPRP official who was scheduled to attend the meeting, told Ethiopian Media Services (EMS) that he and the other three EPRP representatives including the secretary, Mistre Selassie Tamrat, refused to alight from the tour bus organized by the office of the prime minister in a show of opposition.

“It was intentional. We were protesting the cosmetic Abiy Ahmed’s Projects that left many in tears [out of grief]. They do not generate income. on the contrary they displaced many people,” Yishak explained why they remained in the bus when the rest of the opposition party leaders bowed to what the government asked them to do.

Opposition party leaders headed to the office of the Prime Minister on Thursday and the meeting started around 8:30 a.m. local time.

Based on the eyewitness account of Yishak Wolday, the prime minister gave the opportunity for about twenty opposition figures, apparently from different parties. The EPRP was excluded.

The had been a recorded incident in April 2024 during a meeting between the prime minister and opposition parties whereby  EPRP secretary at  the time, Desta Tilahun, posed questions that angered the Prime Minister, saying ““Are you a prime minister or a king?”” He insulted her and  the party  as “moldy.”

Yisak did not hide that the prime minister was going to face tough questions from EPRP this time around too – perhaps the reason why he did not give EPRP representatives a chance to ask questions.

“What we were planning for the meeting was to raise stronger questions that reflect the people’s demand,” he said.

He added, ” we were repeatedly denied the chance to speak. We could not speak in between because it was stated from the beginning that it is not allowed to speak if chance is not given.”

EPRP representatives then walked out of the meeting.

  1. This group must be very careful so not to repeat its disastrous experience from the 1970’s. It should avoid confrontational politics. Let’s talk about this incidence where its representatives walked out of the meeting. They were shunned from asking questions but were allowed to stay and attend the pow wow. They kicked themselves out. Did they have the permission from their leadership committee to walk out? They should have stayed and hear/see what went down throughout the meeting. Other did. By walking out, they have not accomplished anything that may further the accord for their cause. This is just my personal opinion but they are entitled to their device.
