Ethiopian Government has not remarked on the rebel’s claim

Toronto – Rebel groups operating in the Amhara region of Ethiopia on Sunday claimed that they shot down a military helicopter.
Ethio Focus, one of the few reliable local news providers, cited Kirubel Gobe, public relation of Amhara Fano Popular Organization spokesperson of Gondar Division, to report that the incident took place around 6:45 local time.
The location is reported as the central Gondar zone, Dembia district, Debresina locality. Residents from the area are cited as saying “they have heard a loud explosion.”
The Helicopter was reportedly making trips between Gondar city and Gorgora resort. Kirubel is cited as saying the fano forces shot it down during its second trip using an RPG launcher.
The source added that the helicopter was “carrying government officials.” However, the identities of these officials is unspecified.
Ethiopian Taye Askeselassie, Deputy Prime Minister Temesgen Tiruneh and speaker of the House of Federation, Agegnehu Teshager were among the senior government officials who were attending an inaugural event at the University of Gondar.
However, there is no indication if they were on board of the helicopter that is said to be shot down.
Earlier this week, Defense Chief of Staff, Field Marshal Berhanu Jula, claimed, when he appeared in the Ethiopian Parliament to present a nine months performance report, that 90 percent of the rebel groups were annihilated.
However, there does not seem to be any indication of reports of helicopter accidents from the Amhara region state owned media or a remark from the Federal Government at the time of this writing.
