Toronto – The Tigray region of Ethiopia has been undergoing a major political and security crisis for many months now following what appeared first a schism within that used to the Tigray People’s Liberation Army.
The faction under Getachew Reda, who served as president of Tigray Interim Administration, finally announced the formation of a new political party – Semeret – after months long controversy with the other faction of the TPLF under Debretsion Gebremichael.
The two factions formed alliances with two governments who were allies during the war between TPLF and the Federal government under Abiy Ahmed. While the Debretsions faction forged alliances with Eritrean government, it is now official, resetting all the troubles and allegations, including allegations of genocide, against Eritrean government, the Getachew Faction allied with the Federal government. Getachew himself took a position with the Federal government as Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s Advisor on the Horn of Africa Affairs. The TPLF under Debretsion was reported to have more than 200,000 armed forces before this development.
Another major Military Development
As it turns out a portion of what used to be ” Tigray Defense Force” are regrouping in the Afar region of Ethiopia with a reported move to challenge the TPLF under Debretsion through military means. Some of the leaders of this group are said to be military commanders who walked out during the January 2025 meeting of military commanders who expressed support to Debretsion opposing the then Interim Administration under Getahew Reda. There were about 20 military commanders who walked out of that meeting, according to reports from the region.
BBC Amharic reported this week, citing Brigadier General Gebreegziabher Beyene ( also known as Wodi Antiru) who had an interview with BBC Tigrigna service.
He describes the military forces he is trying to organize in the parts of Afar region adjacent to the Tigray region of Ethiopia as one that is free from the “influence of political parties.” The Federal government is aware about the existence of this force in the Afar area ,and the leader says they are not getting aid from it.
The group seems to allege that the other portion of what used to be Tigray Defense Force is under the influence of the TPLF which is now totally under Depresion – party chairman and former president of the Tigray region of Ethiopia.
What is known at this point is, based on a BBC Amharic report, Brigadier General Gebreegziabhier has organized four divisions of forces. It is currently operating along the Afar and Tigray regions of Ethiopia. For now, his forces are in three fronts along the Tigray-Afar area. He says members of this force had grievances. He also say there are also many within the military forces that is said to be under the influence of Debretsion Gebremcael
“We are now in a struggle. We aged in struggle,” he is quoted as saying. He has boldly criticized that the army organized as Tigary Defense Force has become a clique to a “party” – a reference to the Debretsion led faction.
He describes the force he is organizing as independent with no affiliation to a party. He spoke that the vision is not to leave a force, to the young generation, that is a clique to a party.
He claimed that there was an effort to resolve differences with the military leaders through dialogue. It did not work out.
He wants the TPLF to leave “the people of Tigray” alone. “Let it stand on its own and compete. Whether TPLF vanishes or not is up to itself. whether it continues or not is up to itself. What concerns me is the affair of the people of Tigray,” he told the BBC Tigrigna program.
Given the tension between Ethiopia and Eritrea and the formation of new alliances, the emergence of this force under Brigadier General Gebreegziabhier Beyene and few other military commanders is another indication that the crisis in the Tigray region of Ethiopia is likley heading to a military conflict.

Opening new armed front, for what? For another deadly and destructive war? I have read the background of this warmonger and I realized he is one of those deacons/darasaas of Marx, Lenin and Mao. These commies are like maggots that will leech on the thought process of the gullible youth. They send the incited hapless youth in awaiting infernos from their safe caves. I hope those upright and noble people of Tigray will wake up to these conniving and bigoted commies and tell them this time is a no no. I hope they will stand up in unison and refuse to send their Allah gifted children to another senseless conflict. These commies are shameless and repeat offenders to their own people. I hope the noble people of Tigray will rise up against these closeted atheists and show them the exit door for the last time. If there is going to be another bloody war in that region, I will be holding all the regional and federal government leaders responsible for all the deaths and destruction from the conflict. Debre and every official in Tigray, wise up! PM Abiy, wise up!!! I’m calling on The ICC at The Hague to issue warning these leaders that there will be consequences if another war erupts in that region. It should warn them with eminent arrest warrants.
