Toronto – In what many voices from the world of Ethiopian activists and opposition voices seem to see as an “image building” activity, the Ethiopian Prime Minister continues his “meeting” with community representatives.
The latest was with representatives from Ethiopian teachers. He framed the purpose of the meeting as one that is aimed at gaining “input” for policy development.
It appears that the teachers were carefully selected through government structure and they had a meeting about the issues they raise during the meeting with the prime minister.
Many of the questions they raised are economic. The prime minister addressed them with a tone as if the economic hardships teachers are facing are a form of sacrifice “for the future of their children.”
Regarding the issue of peace, the prime minister made accusations that some teachers opted to join armed groups to fight against the government. The reasons why teachers opted for armed resistance against his government are not explained or discussed.
Based on reports from local news sources, teachers have sentiment that the meeting with the Prime Minister did not address the issue and rather he used the platform to paint a grandiose image of his government. His effort is seen as election related activity ahead of the upcoming 7th general election in the country.
