Toronto – Ethiopian Defense Chief of Staff, Field Marshal Berhanu Jula, appeared at the parliament this week to present a nine months performance report.
While making the claims that a force capable of defending Ethiopia from any provocation is created, he made accusations against Eritrea and internal forces undertaking armed resistance against Abiy Ahmed led Ethiopian government.
Regarding Eritrea, the Defense Chief said “our government” has made an effort to end the chapter of conflict with Eritrea and cooperate. However, it was not a success. He accused Eritrea of having a tendency to dictate over the people (the Ethiopian people) using the access to the sea as a tool.
“Eritrea wants to control Ethiopia as it pleases because it has control over the sea”, the Defense Chief alleged.
He also alleges that there are countries in the region that “hate” Ethiopia and regularly engage in sabotaging Ethiopia not to have access to the sea. “What happens if Ethiopia’s ship is blocked?” he asked parliamentarians in an effort to show the danger Ethiopia is facing in the region because it has been reduced to a landlocked status.
The effort to secure sea access is highlighted but no detail was given. He spoke with a tone that a conflict is inevitable in connection with securing sea access to Ethiopia.
The progress with restoring the naval forces is highlighted in the report. The Defense Chief stated that it is almost completed and a force capable of defending Ethiopia’s security over the sea is built.
Apart from Eritrea, the Defense Chief made allegations against Ethiopians whom he said are “serving the interests of enemies.”
Eritrea has not responded to the latest accusation from the Ethiopian government this time via the defense chief.
