Toronto – There are clear signs that the ruling Prosperity Party is working in full gear, yet seamlessly, towards the seventh general election in Ethiopia.

Last week,  the state media released a four parts interview with the Prime Minister. He basically narrated what his party has achieved over the past seven years while painting the “prosperity” he is bringing to the country in the years to come.  In areas where there is a chronic crisis – like the security situation in the country – they blamed it all on other parties.

In the same week the interview was aired, he travelled to Wolayta Sodo where it was staged to create the impression that his party does not have a legitimacy crisis. Tens of thousands of residents came to the street to cheer him up – of course with tight security detail.

Today, the office of the Prime Minister announced that he held a meeting with members of the business community from across the country – seemingly confirming that that party has started what appears like an informal election campain. The purpose was, as the office puts it, “building on previous engagements at the zonal, regional, and city levels.”

Prime Minister Abiy wrote on his social media page “…This platform was created to listen to the concerns and insights of the business sector, gathered from every level, and to incorporate them as valuable inputs into our ongoing national plans and development goals…”

Abiy Ahmed’s ruling party has suffered a legitimacy crisis in the past few years. Worsening security situation in the country and unprecedented cost of living crisis, one that manifested itself by way of – among other things – professionals who used to have a decent lifestyle by the standard of the country – like health care professionals – are now on strike demanding a livable salary.

In terms of the security situation, the Amhara and Oromia regions of Ethiopia have become conflict zones for several years now. Another war is reportedly brewing in the north involving the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) – this time it is allying with Eritrea – as was the case during the guerrilla war in the late 70’s and 80’s.
