Toronto – Ethiopian Police on Monday arrested Former Ethiopian State Minister for Peace, Taye Dendea. His spouse has confirmed the story, according to BBC Amharic Report.
He was released from Prison in December 2024 on a 20,000 birr bail. He was arrested in December 2023 a day after he vehemently criticized Abiy Ahmed as a “ruthless man who plays with the blood of innocent humans.” Taye also criticized the government for “failure to reach negotiation with the Oromo Liberation Army.”
Taye ‘s court case is revived and he will be facing two charges that were dropped in December 2024. “Inciting violence” and “supporting anti-peace forces” are the charges the court revived. He was also accused of violating firearm possession regulations.
Taye continued criticizing Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed in connection with the conflict situation in the country and many other issues including the response to Ethiopian Medical Professionals demand for a living wage.
Sentayehu Alemayehu, spouse, is cited as saying Taye was arrested on Monday around 4 P.M. local time. Police in a uniform entered his resident and told him that he is wanted for interrogation by Federal police, she added. Taye is said to have informed the police that he is a member of Oromia regional parliament.
According to his wife, the policemen who came to his residence were over ten. His spouse was informed that he will be taken to the Federal Police Office in Addis Ababa. However, she is unaware as to where Taye is arrested until Monday evening Addis Ababa time.
The Federal Police has not remarked about Taye’s arrest at the time of this writing.
Taye has been very active on social media since he was released and stubbornly shared views criticizing the Abiy Ahmed led government. He has a huge social media following. As a one time insider to the ruling prosperity party, there seems to be a tendency to believe that Taye is sharing an informed opinion.
His arrest is seen as an additional evidence of political repression in the country. Prominent figures known in the country for their human rights work seem to see the arrest as politically motivated. Yared Hailemariam is one of them. “Taye Dendea is a prisoner of conscience or political prisoner…,” he wrote on his social media page.

Dear Editors,
We should see the final of Miss World 2025 posted on your esteemed website. A friend shot me an email this evening telling me about it. Our Daughter/Sister Hasset bint Dereje Admassu was the 1st runner-up. We need a story like that to lighten us up amidst the flurry of depressing news coming out of the old country.
Blessings to you and your family.
