Addis Ababa, Ethiopia — A high-level joint business delegation from Belgium and Luxembourg visited Ethiopia today to explore  trade expansion and investment ties with the East African nation. The delegation participated in the Ethiopia-Belgium-Luxembourg Trade and Investment Forum held in Addis Ababa, an event aimed at strengthening economic cooperation between the countries.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia rates the forum as a key milestone in the growing partnership with the BENELUX region.

In his opening remarks, Ethiopia’s Minister of Finance, Ahmed Shide, highlighted the country’s commitment to macroeconomic reforms aimed at opening new avenues for foreign investment.

“Our bilateral and multilateral cooperation with Belgium and Luxembourg continues to deepen,” said Minister Shide. “Ethiopia’s ongoing reforms present vast opportunities in sectors such as agriculture, mining, manufacturing, ICT, and industry.”

Hassan Mohamed, State Minister of Industry, underscored the government’s focus on modernizing its industrial sector.

“Belgian and Luxembourgish companies have a proven track record, particularly in manufacturing, chemical processing, and steel engineering,” he said.

Ethiopian Investment Commissioner Zeleke Temesgen assured the delegation of the country’s support for foreign investors.

“We are ready to provide full assistance to Belgian and Luxembourgish investors, whether they seek to establish wholly-owned operations or joint ventures,” Commissioner Zeleke noted.

Belgium’s Ambassador to Ethiopia, Annelies Verstichel, emphasized the longstanding ties between the two nations.

“Belgium and Ethiopia share over 120 years of diplomatic relations,” she said. “This forum strengthens our bond and opens new opportunities for mutually beneficial trade and investment.”

The forum was organized in collaboration with the Ethiopian Embassy in Brussels, the Belgian Embassy in Addis Ababa, and the Chamber of Commerce, Industry, and Agriculture for Belgium, Luxembourg, Africa, the Caribbean, and the Pacific (CPL-ACP).

Officials from both the public and private sectors expressed optimism that the forum would lead to concrete business partnerships and expanded economic engagement.

  1. This is great news for the job seeking citizens of the old country. We should all encourage and press businesses in the West to consider the old country in their search for overseas factories. My conviction factories are known to be natural born middle class creators and liberators of women. The more factories the more middle class and liberated women will be the new reality. Then when the middle class becomes the majority then it becomes killer tsunamis for despots. I had seen it myself happening in Taiwan, South Korea and Chile. I had elaborated on this subject/theory in detail in the past. You should ask the question yourself and it won’t be that taxing for you to find out. Ask the question: Where are the Parks, Chiang Kai-shek’s and Pinochet’s? What happened to them and their immediate successors? Aha, aha!!! The middle class is tough cookie when it becomes a majority in a given society. That has been what Africa except South Africa and May be Botswana has been lacking since the 1960’s.
