Toronto – Less than a week after Eritrean President Isaias Afewerki made an extensive critical remark on Ethiopia during his Eritrea’s Independence Day speech, Ethiopian Defense Minister Aisha Mohammed seems to be responding in kind.
She is the first senior Ethiopian government official to respond in such a manner. ” The person who calls himself a leader [president Isaias] is typical of them to dare to speak about Ethiopia in this way. It is impossible to call Eritrea a country where the people live in fear and are forced to flee,” she is cited as saying. President Isaisas described Ethiopia as a country that has been experiencing turmoil for eighty years because of its status as a proxy state (both to western powers and Russia. He alleges that the country is serving the interests of other powers. He also described the ideology of Abiy Ahmed as “Oromummaa,” – a remark that triggered a knee jerk reaction from ethnic Oromo nationalists forces that is currently dominating power in Ethiopia.
Aisha Mohammed made the remark this week while speaking about “the reforms” the Defense Force has been undergoing since the “change” – a reference to Abiy Ahmed’s take over of power as Prime Minister.
“Ethiopia has built Ground Force, Airforce, Mechanized, Navy, Special Operation and Cyber Force that is capable of reversing attack from any direction,” she is cited as saying. Continuous recruitment and training of defense force units has long been making headlines in the state-owned media outlets. Many seemed to have linked it, initially, to the ongoing conflicts in the Amahra and Oromia region of Ethiopia.
Furthermore, she added that the defense force is not prepared for local small parochial groups here and there locally who are “listening to the advice of others” , it is prepared for countries that dare to violate Ethiopia’s national interest and sovereignty.
The relation between Ethiopia and Eritrea deteriorated fast following the end of the war between the Federal government under Aiby Ahmed and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front led Tigray regional Administration which was fought between November 2020 and November 2022.
The Eritrean government allied with Abiy Ahmed’s government during the war against TPLF. Now, it is reportedly allying with a TPLF under Debretsion Gebremicael against Abiy Ahmed’s government. There is speculation that the two countries could go to war any time.

Did you notice what this Taytu incarnate said? She goes: ‘the defense force is not prepared for local small parochial groups here and there locally who are “listening to the advice of others” , it is prepared for countries that dare to violate Ethiopia’s national interest and sovereignty.’ Ooh wee!!!! If I were Wedi Afo in Piccola Roma, after reading this, I would get to the Red Sea on the fastest way possible and jump in it to never come up. This is just too much, man! ‘Local small parochial groups’? That would have been it for me if I were Isu and to end it all for me. I would either scale up the tallest tower in my town and jump off to my death or stand in front of a speeding truck. She hurt me too much, man! I would seriously contemplate to take my case against her all the way to The ICC at The Hague for torturing me mentally. She called me names, man!!!! She must be a surviving member of the Menkae or Yemene groups I annihilated in the 1970’s. That is what Isu is fuming with now after reading Defense Minister H.E. Aisha Mohammed’s comment.
kkkkk WE DON’T HAVE TIME FOR WAR………….
As an Eritrean youth have you ever seen Eritrean people to choose war over peace NO, hard proof we accepted the peace talk between Eritrea and Ethiopia in 2018 without any comment because we believe forgiving and choosing peace is a very mannerly thing to do after all those crimes which were done to us….so if you don’t know the people of Eritrea and Our president please stop being foolish and think about your future generation…… please for once…..
Back and forth ‘rhetoric’ does not solve the ‘problems’, worse might lead into conflict where millions of innocent citizens suffer the consequences.
Dialog is the only path to a lasting PEACE.
If the Prime minister picks up the phone and sets up a meeting with the Eritrean President tomorrow morning, before the weekend substantial progress can be made.
Not only can the major dispute be resolved, it could even lead to a win/win agreement that will benefit the peoples of the two nations not only in the near future but for the generations to come.
The two nations can establish a joint NAVAL force & a commercial-port that will serve both nations, & create thousands of jobs for the young people of both nations… and make them both benefit by becoming the major gate-way to Africa & a trade-hub to Europe, the Gulf, and Asia.
Kill the urge to go to WAR at home and elsewhere, focus on ‘changing lives’ with GOODWILL and development…. it is due to poverty & the lack of development conflicts & disagreements arise!
We should have learnt that by now!
WAR solves nothing, but multiply the death & suffering of citizens, and a decline in economic progress… ( 50 years ago in 1975 US dent was $533 billion, China GDP $163 million… 2025 US (WAR) debt $37 trillion & millions DEAD, China’s GDP 18.4 trillion, pulled 800 million OUT of poverty ) .
Be the first to admit ERRORS and open the gates for others to do the same… you would be surprised who liberating it would be for everyone involved.
We all are interested in the same things, a better life! it is only possible by working together not against each other, or by denying or sabotaging others!
Let us take from the Chinese: “let one hundred flowers bloom…”
Humility goes a long way; don’t just think it, act on it !!!
Pick up the phone, yourself PM!
End the cycle of violence, for one and for all, make your 2018 ‘Noble Prize’ count!
Be well.
thanks for the righteous comment, Eritrean people and government doesn’t choose to go to any kind of war, besides even if you see our history there is no clue of Eritreans starting a war because we value and adhere one person’s life, but off coarse if someone tries to take something that we own we will definitely defend it even with the last tip our blood, we have no time to war and clueless speeches i agree with you T, NO more war
yeah i agree with what T is saying……………
Be genuine and have a talk with our President,
