Toronto – With the deepening relation between the Debretsion led faction of the TPLF and the Eritrean government, the Tigray region is undergoing political and security changes.

BBC Amharic this week cited authority in the Tigray region to report that checkpoints the Eritrean forces put in place along the Adigrat-Zalambessa road are removed.  The reason why it is removed is unspecified. The robust checks for vehicles and people between the two points are also removed.

The authority spoke on condition of anonymity.  It is also indicated that Eritrean troops withdrew as of May 18, 2025.

The source also indicated that there was an Ethiopian government custom office at Fatsi which is about 20 kilometers from Zalambessa town and no regular trade activities between people from two sides of the border were controlled. The customs office is still controlling contraband activities, according to authorities from the area.

There were also reports on social media, as BBC Amharic noted, that Eritrean force who were in control of the areas have withdrawn from the areas.

However, residents from the area who spoke to the source say Eritrea troops are still in the area. Zalambessa, Rama, Shiraro and Badime ( a village that is said to have caused the 1998-2000 bloody war) are still under Eritrean forces.

Eritrean troops are active in areas under Shiraro district including Adi Tsetser, Blachima, Sembel, Badime, Hadish Adi, Dembo Gudamu and Dembo Mongil – the source added.

Also, residents told the source that no Ethiopian Federal government forces are in the area. Tigray regional forces are not in the area either.

The border areas in Northern Tigray are under the control of Eritrean troops.

Apart from Shiraro, residents from the Rama area of the border have told the sources that the area is under Eritrean government troops.

Partial people to people relations are started in the but not in an official way.  Tadesse Worede, Tigray Region Interim Administration President, signed a covenant with the Federal government when he was appointed to the position in April 2024 to control unauthorized foreign relations in the region.

However, the military leaders in support of the Debretsion faction have rejected the Federal government’s tendency to control relations with Eritrea. This week, General Kinfe Dagnaw has officially rejected that Tigray does not need authorization from the Federal government for relation with Shabia (Eritrean government.)

The relation between Eritrea and Ethiopia has reached a point of confrontation. There are fears that the two could go to war at any time.
