Toronto – The Holy Synod of Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church on Friday announced that it has named a new Secretary of the Holy Synod and new General Manager of the Office of the Patriarchate of the Holy See.
His Grace Abune Dioscorus is replacing his grace Abube Abraham as the General Secretary of the Holy Synod. The latter has been serving in that role for the past three years. Abune Dioskoros has served Archbishop Alamata and Raya area (the administration in Tigray region call it South Tigray.)
Abune Sawiros is replacing Abune Petros, who was under entry ban to Ethiopia for over a year until this month, as General Manager of the Office of the Patriarchate of the Holy See.
The selection of Abune Sawiros has raised questions if the Holy Synod is still under pressure from Abiy Ahmed’s Administration. In January 2023, he was used, apparently by politically motivated ethnic nationalist group including from within the government structure, in a plot to break up the Holy Synod of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church when he was named as a “Patriarch of Oromia Church” with 12 others renegade new bishops who were promoted to the status at the time when the plot was under way. Dozens of Ethiopian church followers have been killed especially in the Oromia region Ethiopia as the move to break up the church along ethnic lines met with resistance.
The Holy Synod also announced other appointments. Abune Hiriakos is named as the Archbishop of the Addis Ababa Dioceses. It used to be under Abune Henok for the past three years. This particular Diocese has seen the appointment of Younger Archbishops over the past six years.
His Grace Abune Nathenael is named as Archbishop of the Holy Land Jerusalem Monasteries. He will als be serving as Archbishop of Colorado Dioceses in North America.
His Grace Abune Henok is assigned to the South Africa Dioceses. His Grace Abune Enbaqom is named as head of the Monasteries in the country.
His Grace Abune Mussie will serve as head of the Australia Dioceses while maintaining his role as Archbishop of St. Gabriel and the Monastery of the Virgin Mary in Gebi,
