Toronto – As the Ethiopian government continues to make claims that Fano forces operating in different parts of the Amhara region of Ethiopia are surrendering, local news sources are reporting considerable losses of government forces in many localities due to ambush and surprise attacks on selected military targets. There are also reports of intense fighting in several other locations.

In Shewa Robit, North Shoa, Fano forces this week launched a surprise attack targeting a temporary military camp where the ruling party officials have been living recently due to security concerns.

Ethio Focus news reported the grenade attack, which appears to be a coordinated one, was carried out during night time. Kewet District head, Seid Mekonnen, and his deputy Dejene Melke are seriously wounded and hospitalized. The mayor, Zelamem Mekonen, is also wounded, according to the source.  Up to 20 other militia and anti-riot forces who were in the camp are also said to be wounded. Three government forces are reported to be killed from the attack.

In the western part of Amhara region, multiples of intense fighting have been reported in east and north Gojjam. In the Dejen area, at least 45 government forces were killed or wounded following hours long intense battle against Fano forces. Reinforcement deployed to the area after the battle have reportedly killed two civilians and abducted a young man. The casualties on the part of Fano forces were unspecified.

In North Mecha, Fano forces launched, according to Ethio News, a surprise attack targeting a government forces camp. A senior defense commander is among the dead from the attacks. However, the number of casualties including from the Fano forces is unspecified.

In the Motta area of Muger locality, still in Gojjam, at least 25 government forces are wounded or killed. Fano forces did not disclose the casualties on their part.

Further north, in Gondar, Armachicho ,Genete, Ajire Janora localities have experienced intense fighting. The fighting in Ajere Janor   a was ongoing for two days in a row, according to Ethio Focus report. This is where the government forces have reportedly suffered hundreds of casualties, according to the source.

In South Gondar, Gaint area, at least 15 government forces have been killed after Fano forces carried out an ambush attack.

In  Shewa, Menth morale area, a tense fighting is reported. The government has reportedly deployed infantry commandos to the area from three directions with a plan to sandwich fano forces. Ethio Focus reported that the battle was underway for days but the government forces were unable to circle two divisions of Fano forces. The location is within 100 kilometers of distance to the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa.

The Ethiopian government has been claiming, as has been the case for most part of the past two years, that the spine of Fano is broken and that it is no longer in a position to undertake a serious offensive.

The Fano forces have been reorganizing over the past few months as part of a move to create a single Fano organization. About two weeks ago, four major Fano forces operating in the region announced the formation of Amhara Fano National Force (AFNF), a single Fano structure.

Unlike the past two years, there are now only two major organized Fano forces operating in the region.  One is AFNF and the other is Amhara Fano Popular Organization (AFPO).

Both Fano groups are said to have hundreds of thousands of combatants across the Amhara region.
