Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – U.S. Ambassador to Ethiopia Ervin Massinga traveled to Shire, Tigray Region, yesterday to assess U.S. Government humanitarian programs and the situation for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in the area.
The visit underscores the United States’ continued commitment to efficiently deliver lifesaving aid to Ethiopia, even as it reorganizes its foreign assistance management. The U.S. remains the single largest donor of humanitarian aid to the country.
During his visit, Ambassador Massinga toured the Fre Siweat and Mai Dimu IDP sites, where he observed the distribution of food assistance and the provision of health services. The Ambassador also engaged directly with residents of these sites “to talk firsthand to people living at these sites, and better understand what life is like for them there.” He also met with humanitarian assistance partners to discuss their ongoing work.
While recognizing that humanitarian assistance currently addresses emergency needs, Ambassador Massinga emphasized that “ultimately only a political solution will allow IDPs to return home.” To that end, he held a series of meetings with local leadership focused on ensuring the full implementation of the Cessation of Hostilities Agreement (COHA).
In his conversations with regional officials and U.S. partners, the Ambassador stressed the importance of ensuring that aid “must reach the people who need it—not just in Shire, but across the region and the country.” He also expressed gratitude to U.S. partners for their persistent efforts “on behalf of the American people and in support of Ethiopia.”
