ADDIS ABABA, ETHIOPIA — Ethiopia and the Czech Republic have agreed to deepen their military cooperation following high-level bilateral talks held in Prague. The Minister of Defense of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia (FDRE), Engineer Aisha Mohammed, met with her Czech counterpart, Jana Černochová, to discuss expanding strategic ties between the two nations.

According to a statement from Ethiopia’s National Defense Force (ENDF), the discussions focused on a range of key areas including technology transfer, defense industry collaboration, aeromedical support and maintenance, as well as training and capacity building.

“The two countries agreed to enhance their partnership and expand mutual benefit,” the Ministry said, emphasizing that the talks were part of a broader effort to elevate defense cooperation to a new level.

The discussions build on a long-standing defense relationship between Ethiopia and the Czech Republic, with both sides indicating that the signing of memorandums of understanding (MoUs) in the near future will serve as a crucial step toward institutionalizing their collaboration.

While no specific date for the signing of new MoUs was provided, the recent engagement follows the 2018 defense cooperation agreement signed between Ethiopia and the Czech Republic, which laid the foundation for joint training programs and technical support.

On 16 February 2018, the Czech Republic and Ethiopia signed a Memorandum of Understanding on Development Cooperation, reinforcing a partnership that began in 2010. With Ethiopia designated as a priority country, the Czech government extended its support through 2023, focusing on agriculture, rural development, and sustainable natural resource management—particularly in the Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples’ Region. The Czech Development Cooperation allocates about USD 3.5 million annually to projects aligned with Ethiopia’s Growth and Transformation Plan II, aiming to boost sustainable, inclusive economic growth and improve quality of life, drawing from the Czech Republic’s own transition experience.

During her visit, Minister Aisha Mohammed led a delegation that engaged in further strategic talks in Prague, aimed at reinforcing shared defense priorities.

The Czech Republic, a NATO member, has been expanding its defense partnerships with African countries in recent years, with a particular focus on technology sharing and industrial collaboration.
