Addis Ababa, Ethiopia- The National Bank of Ethiopia (NBE) has officially launched the Financial Sector Strengthening Project (FSSP), a US$700 million initiative financed by the World Bank. The first tranche of US$250 million was disbursed today to the Commercial Bank of Ethiopia.
Announced at the Ethiopia Finance Forum, the project is being implemented collaboratively by the National Bank of Ethiopia, the Commercial Bank of Ethiopia, and the Development Bank of Ethiopia.
“This project marks a significant step in Ethiopia’s journey toward a more robust and sustainable financial sector,” said the NBE in a statement. “It lays the foundation for inclusive and resilient economic growth. This vital initiative will enhance the stability of the financial sector and contribute meaningfully to Ethiopia’s long-term development.”
It is notable that the Ethiopia Finance Forum (EFF) 2025 was a two-day event held on May 15–16, 2025, at the Ethiopia Museum of Art and Science in Addis Ababa. Organized by the National Bank of Ethiopia, the forum brought together policymakers, financial institutions, investors, and development partners to discuss the country’s evolving financial landscape
