Toronto – As the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) is getting closer to igniting another round of war that is believed to have a devastating effect if started, people are taking to the street to oppose war.

This time the rally was in the Tigray region itself. Residents of  Maychew city south of the regional capital Mekelle took to the street  to oppose war.

The rally was organized in reaction to a statement that Debretsion’s group released sometime last week defying the National electoral board of Ethiopia and threatening war to “restore Tigray sovereign  territory.”

A faction of the TPLF under the leadership of Debretsion Gebremicael has reportedly been working with the Eritrean government with the intention to start a conflict in northern Ethiopia. Opposition parties operating in the region have been expressing concern about it. The Federal government has also been making similar accusations against this faction. However, Debretsion and Eritrea have been denying it. A few months ago, Eritrea issued a statement calling the accusation “war mongering.”

For people in the Tigray region of Ethiopia, it appears that the threat of a new war in region is imminent.  From a picture shared on social media and video footage published by Tigray Media House, residents of Maychew who attended the atni-war rally were seen carrying slogans that call for peace.

“Our choice is peace,” and  “we can not tolerate anyone that is tampering with our administration”    were among the slogans that protestors chanted.

There were also slogans that directly opposed the alleged new alliance between Debretsion’s faction and the Eritrean government. “We do not have a connection with a force that is in the service of Shabia’s mission [ a reference to the Eritrean government].

Yohannes Adugna, the city’s mayor, and Haftu Kiros South Tigray zone head, made a speech at the rally.  They spoke about the need to be “awake more than ever before to protect peace.”

Notably, the National Electoral Board of Ethiopia on Wednesday removed the TPLF from the list of political parties register over non-compliance electoral board regulations and rules. It means that the TPLF has no longer a legal status to operate as a political party. However, the Debretsion faction released a statement on Friday condemning the Board’s decision and wrote a letter to the African Union making claims that the decision violates the Pretoria Agreement

During the war, Ethiopian parliament designated the TPLF as a terrorist organization.

There were also reports that the Federal police forces have started to enter the Tigray region to reinforce the protection of federal institutions and infrastructures including airports, banks, telecom and electric power installations.

  1. Dear editors,

I caught a slight spelling booboo for you. Check out this phrase just under the 2nd photo.
‘footage published by Tigray Media House, residents of Maychew who attended the atni-war rally were seen carrying slogans that call for peace.’ atni-war to anti-war would make it even more tasteful.

  2. We should all stand shoulder to shoulder with the noble of Tigray in their call for peace. War was never their choice but it was propagated by the deacons/darasaas of Marx/Lenin/Mao since 1975. They have died in their millions just to go from one destructive war to another even more destructive and deadlier war. Finally they’ve had it and are say enough already. Look at some of the leaders of that outfit that threw the homes of those upright up in smoke. These so-called leaders have stashed away their children at safe places in Europe and USA but they have been snatching away the children of Tigray from their mothers and tossing them ujum in awaiting inferno. These conniving leaders even had all worked it out for them in getting US citizenship for their children. Connivers! Demonic hypocrites!!! That is what commies do and what is always in their working protocol. That is why I have nothing but utter contempt for these conniving demons.
