Health Service Delivery jeopardized across Ethiopia except for emergency and critical conditions

Borkena
Toronto – It has been two days since Ethiopian Health Professionals have started a nationwide strike after weeks of warning to the government to address their grievances.
According to sources like Anchor Media, hospitals and health centers across the country have mostly suspended service except emergency and critical conditions.
The Federal government resorted to intimidation rather than addressing their concern. There have been reported arrests of doctors and other medical professionals in different parts of the country. Borkena reported it earlier this week.
It has been confirmed that dozens of medical doctors in different parts of Ethiopia are reportedly detained in connection with the strike.
The doctors are protesting poor living conditions and low pay. Experienced Ethiopian Doctors are earning under $100 U.S. a month.
Living conditions across Ethiopia deteriorated further after Abiy Ahmed’s government devalued the Ethiopian currency by more than 100 percent since July 2024 – apparently due to pressure from the IMF and World Bank as a precondition for Extended Credit Facility approval.
There are also reports that teachers are expressing intent to join the strike and the government is trying to avert it by appeasing teachers with the possibility of land appropriation – particularly in the Oromia region of Ethiopia -, according to a report by Anchor media.
