Addis Ababa, Ethiopia- Oromia Cooperative Bank (OCB) has announced that its customers can now pay for their electricity services using the “Coopay E-Birr” mobile application, Sheger FM reports.
This development follows an agreement signed between the President of Oromia Cooperative Bank, Derbie Asfaw, and the Chief Executive Officer of Ethiopian Electric Utility (EEU), Getu Geremew.
OCB stated that over 17 million of its customers can now conveniently pay their electricity bills through the “Coopay E-Birr” mobile application starting today. The bank also noted that individuals who are not yet customers can make payments at any of OCB’s over 35,000 agents. Payments can reportedly be made via USSD code *841#.
OCB President Derbie Asfaw mentioned that the Coopay E-Birr platform has so far facilitated transactions exceeding 3 trillion Birr. He emphasized that today’s payment system agreement will enable customers to pay their electricity bills conveniently at any time and location, including weekdays, weekends, and holidays, without any hassle.
OCB CEO Derbie Asfaw stated that the digital service launched today for electricity bill payments via Coopay E-Birr will contribute to realizing the bank’s goal of transforming the community’s way of life.
Ethiopian Electric Utility CEO Getu Geremew explained that 90 percent of EEU’s over 5 million customers already make their electricity payments through digital systems. He recalled that previously, customers could pay via Telebirr, Commercial Bank of Ethiopia, Awash Bank, and Safaricom Ethiopia, adding that the inclusion of Oromia Cooperative Bank will further simplify the payment collection process for EEU.
