When your ሰፈር becomes your ethnicity in Addisite universe

Confession time– I am an Addisite, ያዲስ-አባ ልጅ.  Gen X, raised where identity is not inherited, but crafted like the foam on a macchiato. We in the capital fancy ourselves post-ethnic. We quote Habermas before breakfast and roll our eyes at “ethnic politics” like it is a village issue, best discussed between plowing teff and arguing over land.

But ask yourself — are we post-ethnic, or just post-memory?

We Addisites have no ancestral village. No cow-burying grandma. No uncle dispossessed by a border. We have Woreda ID cards, Google Maps directions to our favorite café, and deep pride in surviving Mexico Square traffic. When we say, “We are Ethiopians, not Oromos or Amharas or Tigrayans,” it is not moral clarity;  it is identity amnesia. Not virtue, but vacancy.

Even when our parents and great auntie whispered heritage over the bunna ceremony, we gagged. Why? Because internalizing ethnicity risks sounding ባላገር or ገጠሬ,  and that is the Addisite’s greatest fear: being rural-adjacent. So we latch onto “unity” as default — a pan-Ethiopianism paved in asphalt and latte foam.

And yet, here is the paradox:
We do not reject tribalism because we are enlightened.
We rejected it because we were never invited to the tribal cookout.

Let me stir the macchiato a bit further.

If you have ever lived in D.C., the Addisite diaspora capital of the world, you have likely seen the ritual: two Ethiopians meet. Do they ask about politics? Region? Religion? Of course not. The real icebreaker is:
“Which part of Addis are you from?”

If both are from Kazanchis — instant blood pact.
If one is from Kechene and the other from Summit… fragile ceasefire.
If one says Bole and the other Entoto…forget it. That friendship is altitude-challenged.

In Addis, tribalism comes with a driveway. There are caste systems based on bus routes. If your line grazes the airport? You’re nobility. If it runs Merkato to Kirkos? Social underworld. School zones forge lifelong loyalties. This is tribalism, no doubt — just dressed in skinny jeans, sipping macchiatos, debating which Ring Road corner has better ጥሬ ስጋ.

Accents? Accents are bloodlines. Say the wrong slang the wrong way, and you are upcountry — even if you lived two streets from Meskel Square.

Let me be clear — this is not self-loathing. It is self-mockery — the Addisite’s national pastime.

We Addisites love to preach:

–       “Why can’t they just think nationally?”

–       “Isn’t it time to move past ethnicity?”

–       “Federalism is tearing us apart!”

And we say this while sipping coffee on land acquired through an uncle who once ran the permits desk at Woreda 8.

But who defines “national unity”?
Who gets to say what lies beyond ethnicity?
And why does the word autonomy make us sweat like we heard rent is due?

Let us not pretend civic nationalism is neutral. The West did not transcend identity; it rebranded it.
America’s “melting pot”? A stew of cultural warfare.
Europe? Populists redefine belonging by passport flavor.

The truth? Our allergy to ethnic politics is not principle; it is privilege.
Unity feels easier when you never had to erase your story to belong.

So, if unity is our goal, we must earn it — not assume it.

We must ask,

–       What does justice mean to those whose voices were silenced?

–       What does dignity feel like to those whose histories were erased?

–       And what scares us about self-determination, exactly?

Maybe it is time we admit Addis is not above tribalism. It just practices it with Wi-Fi and real estate brokers.

So next time I meet a fellow Ethiopian in D.C., I won’t ask what ሰፈር they are from.

I will ask where their story really begins.

Because unity — real unity — does not start with addresses.
It starts with listening.
