Safaricom Ethiopia Reports Strong Financial Performance, Doubling User Base and Growing Revenue by 270%

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – Safaricom Ethiopia has reported strong financial results for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2025, driven by expanded service accessibility, infrastructure growth, community engagement, and resilience amid macroeconomic adjustments.

The company recorded a significant jump in its customer base and service reach, supported by strategic investments and partnerships. Chief Executive Officer Wim Vanhelleputte said :

“Over the past 12 months, through strong investment and strategic leadership, we have grown our customer base and expanded our network coverage and services to reach across Ethiopia. These positive developments have been achieved with the support of the Ethiopian government, regulatory bodies, our shareholders, and our dedicated team. We are committed to playing our part in supporting Ethiopia’s digital transformation through our telecommunications and digital payment services.”

In its official statement, Safaricom Ethiopia revealed that it now covers 50% of the country with fast and reliable 4G services, delivered through 3,141 strategically placed network towers. This infrastructure expansion enabled the company to reach 8.8 million 90-day active voice and internet service customers, reflecting a 103% year-on-year growth.

Additionally, the company recorded 7.1 million 90-day active internet service users, with average monthly data consumption rising to 6.5 GB per usera 53% increase compared to the previous fiscal year.

According to the statement, digital financial services also saw remarkable progress through M-PESA Ethiopia, which served 2.4 million 90-day active customers and facilitated transactions worth 15.8 billion Ethiopian Birr. Key milestones include the enablement of fuel payments, international remittances, and integration with banking services for airtime and utility bill payments.

Safaricom Ethiopia’s revenue for the year reached 7.2 billion Birr, marking a 270% increase from the 2.7 billion Birr reported during the previous fiscal year.

The company, which officially launched operations in Ethiopia on October 6, 2022, has since established mobile services in 11 cities, including the capital Addis Ababa and Dire Dawa. It planned to expand to 25 cities to meet the 25% population coverage obligation outlined in its nationwide Unified Telecommunications Service Licence.

Safaricom Ethiopia was the first private telecom operator to enter the Ethiopian market, breaking the monopoly of state-owned Ethio Telecom. 

The company is backed by a global consortium including Vodafone Group, Safaricom PLC, Vodacom Group, Sumitomo Corporation, and British International Investment (BII)the UK’s development finance institution.
