Toronto – Ethiopia’s middle-distance sensation Tsige Duguma delivered a breathtaking performance at the Shanghai Diamond League, storming to gold in the women’s 800m with a blistering time of 1:56.64—a new national record and meeting record. The 24-year-old Olympic silver medalist showcased her explosive speed, leaving a world-class field in her wake as she powered across the finish line well under the 1:57 mark.
A Race Dominated by Duguma’s Brilliance
From the gun, Duguma positioned herself tactically before unleashing a devastating kick in the final stretch. Her winning time not only secured the top podium spot but also etched her name deeper into Ethiopian athletics history.
“There was also a strong finish by Ethiopia’s Tsige Duguma in the 800m. The Olympic silver medalist charged over the finish line in 1:56.64 – a national record as well as a meeting record – to lead the top six under 1:59,” reported World Athletics.
Podium Finishers and Ethiopian Contingent
Silver: Australia’s Sarah Billings set a personal best (1:57.83) in a gutsy runner-up effort.
Bronze: Uganda’s Halimah Nakaayi, the 2019 World Champion, claimed third in 1:58.39.
Ethiopia’s depth in the event was on full display, with three more athletes reaching the final:
Nigist Getachew – 6th (1:58.67)
Habitam Alemu – 8th (season-best 1:59.57)
Saron Berhe – 11th (2:02.43)
Duguma’s Meteoric Rise
Hailing from Kamashi, Ethiopia, Duguma has rapidly ascended as a force in middle-distance running. Earlier this year, she triumphed at the World Athletics Indoor Championships (Glasgow 2024), seizing gold in the same discipline. With this latest Diamond League victory, she cements her status as a global contender ahead of upcoming major championships.
East African Dominance Across Events
Shanghai’s 2025 Diamond League also highlighted East Africa’s stronghold in endurance races:
Kenya swept the men’s 3000m steeplechase podium.
Ethiopia ruled the men’s 5000m, capturing all three medals in a display of sheer dominance.
As Duguma continues her stellar season, the athletics world watches eagerly—will this be the year she upgrades her Olympic silver to gold?

All glory to our gallant daughter!!! Did you how she destroyed the field? She pulled that field destroyer from her late uncle ‘Yifter the Shifter’ at 100 meters to go. She looked like saying ‘Hey ladies! I gotta go! I hope shopping to do after this. See ya!’. I watched the video clip and it sent me into a trance watching her last blazing dash to the finish line. I’m good now. I’m good for a month!!!
Make that:
1) Did you see how she destroyed….
2) ‘Hey ladies! I gotta go! I have shopping to do…..’
